Open Sentences

An open sentence is a sentence which contains a
variable. A variable is simply a letter used to
represent a number that is unknown. Example: n = 7  
The variable is the letter n. It can be on any side of a
number sentence.
Examples: 5 + n = 9             9 = 5 + n

 

Examples of  open sentence

n + 6 = 12" is an open sentence - the variable is "n."

To solve an open sentence you can do the opposite operation. 
For example if it is an adding problem, you would subtract to
find the missing variable. Example:

4 + n = 12
12 - 4 = 8
n = 8
4 + 8 = 12
