An open sentence is a sentence which contains a variable. A variable
is simply a letter used to represent a number that is unknown.
Example: n = 7 The variable is the letter n. It can be on any side of a
number sentence.

Examples of open sentence
n + 6 = 12" is an open sentence -- the variable is "n."
5 + n = 9 9 = 5 + n

To solve an open sentence you can do the opposite operation. For example if it is
an adding problem, you would subtract to find the missing variable.
4 + n = 12
12 - 4 = 8
n = 8
