Long Division without a Remainder
Many long division problem ends in whole numbers
(with no remainders).
Examples: 36 ÷ 4 = 9, 16 ÷ 4 = 4, 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Example: Word problem:
On the school bus there are 3 seats in each row. How
many rows are needed to seat 48 children ?
Solve the problem using long division.
48 ÷ 3 = ?
How many times 3 will go into 4. 1 times,
So, put the 1 right above the 4.
Multiply the 3 and 1 and put the answer
right under the 4. 3 x 1 = 3
Subtraction 3 from 4 and put the
answer right under the 3. 4 - 3 = 1
Bring down the 8, now we have 18.
Change to
How many times 3 will go into 18... goes
into 18 six times... So, we put the 6 right
above the 8.
Now multiply 3 x 6 = 18
Put the 18 under the 18 and subtract 18
from 18 = 0
Put the 0 under the 18.
Answer: 48 ÷ 3 = 16 with no remainder
16 rows are needed to seat 48 kids
