Long Division with a Remainder
Some times the divisor does not go evenly into
the dividend. These are known as remainders.
Example: 13 ÷ 4 = ?
Write the answer using "r"
for remainder
Example-2: Solve the problem using long division.
66 ÷ 5 = ?
Change the way the problem is written.
How many times 5 will go into 6. 1 times, So,
put the 1 right above the 6.
Multiply the 5 and 1 and put the answer right
under the 6. 5 x 1 = 5
Subtraction 5 from 6 and put the answer right
under the 5. 6 - 5 = 1
Bring down the 6, now
we have 16.
How many times 5 will go into 16... 5 goes into 16 three times...
So, we put that 3 right above the 6.
Now multiply 3 x 5 = 15
Put the 15 under the 16
and subtract 15 from 16 = 1
Put the 1 under the 15.
(The 1 will be the remainder).
Answer: 66 ÷ 5 = 13 R1
