makes them easy to compare.

Compare the fraction 2/4 and 4/6 which is larger ?
12 is the least common multiple of 4 and 6.
Use 12 for the common denominator.
2/4 x 3/3 = 6/12
4/6 x 2/2 = 8/12
5/8 is more than 3/8, so 3/8 is less than 5/8
Now that we have two fractions with the same denominators, we
know that the fraction with the largest numerator is bigger.
