Before you can subtract fractions with unlike
denominators, you need to change the fractions to
equivalent fractions (fractions with same
denominators).

Find the least common denominator (also called LCD).
This the smallest number that will divide both 9 and 3 equally
( no remainder).
The LCM of 9 and 3 is 18
Write an equivalent fraction with the new LCD
Subtract the numerators. The put difference over the common
denominator.
Reduce to lowest terms if needed.
