Place value is the basis of our entire number
system. A place value system is one in which the
position of a digit in a number determines its value.
In the standard system, called base ten, each place
represents ten times the value of the place to its
right. You can think of this as making groups of ten
of the smaller unit and combining them to make a
new unit.

The 4 in the hundreds place

The 4 in tens place equal  40

You can see from the place value chart that the
hundreds place is ten times more than the tens
place. And the tens place is ten times more than
the ones place.

Tr it? Multiply 40  (the value of the tens place) times
ten. 40 x 10 = 400 (the value of the hundreds place)
