When the integers have different signs, find the difference of their
absolute values. Then use the sign of the addend with the greater
absolute value in the sum.

                            36 + [-24]
the integers have different signs. Find the difference of their absolute values

 [36] - [-24] = 36 - 24 = 12
36 has the greatest absolute value, so the sum is positive.
The sum is 12
